The University of St Andrews Boat Club was founded by John Browne in 1962, having arrived at St Andrews to find no sign of any rowing club. By the time of John's graduation, it is believed the club folded, only to be restarted again in the coming years.

FOUNDING STORY

1975

STRAY SIDEWINDER MISSILES & THE EDEN

Like many others, when Paul Maw arrived at St Andrews in 1975, the boat house on the River Eden was standing, but seemed abandoned. A former junior rower, Paul set about re-establishing the club. After painstakingly restoring a single, Paul took to the waters of the Eden estuary one summer evening, to encounter a stray sidewinder missile flying across the river towards him.
