Welcome to the team, Alan!

Eden Boat Club are truly thrilled to congratulate Alan Sinclair OLY on his appointment as the University of St Andrews’ Director of Rowing!

Alan arrives at St Andrews having learnt to row at Inverness Rowing Club and having progressed to become an Olympian for the Great Britain Rowing Team, when he competed in the Men’s Pair at Rio 2016. Alan is one of Scotland’s biggest home grown success stories in recent times and his appointment marks an outstanding commitment from both the University of St Andrews and Saint Sport to the Boat Club and the future of performance rowing in Fife.

Following the initial installation of Iain Rice as Director of Rowing 2014, UStABC has been on a remarkable journey, competing at the highest levels within UK rowing, including winning British Championships, BUCS Gold medals, Scottish team selection and a Henley Royal Semi-Final. Despite the relatively small size of the Club, and its comparative lack of permanent facilities, the University of St Andrews Boat Club has developed through exceptional commitment of athletes, generous support of friends and family and strong leadership from leaders, coaches and volunteers. We see Alan’s appointment as recognition of that commitment, started by the visionary John Browne nearly 60 years ago.

We would also like to take this opportunity in thanking all those individuals involved in the appointment process for their continued support of UStABC, in particular, UStABC President Ailsa Martin, Director of Sport Stephen Stewart, Deputy Director of Sport Ian Gaunt and Scottish Rowing Director of Performance Pathway Lee Boucher. On the appointment, Ian highlights, “We are delighted to welcome Alan to the team at Saints Sport. Adding an Olympian with Alan’s knowledge and experience to the team demonstrates our ambitions for our rowing programme here at St Andrews. We are looking forward to continuing to work closely with Scottish Rowing and are excited about the impact Alan will make as our Director of Rowing”.

In order to welcome Alan to St Andrews as well as kick start the Club back into racing and into its newest chapter, we would like to welcome EBC members to sign up to the Eden Fund. Any monthly donation, no matter how big or small, goes directly to supporting performance rowing at the special town. By Henley Royal Regatta 2021, we are seeking to register 20 Eden Fund donors in order to mark this newest chapter with a substantial gift to St Andrews’ rowers.

We know this is a special community, bonded by unique memories and a shared vision, and with your help and an Olympian at the helm, we want to propel and sustain UStABC to the most adventurous heights going into its 60th year.
